Scorched Tundra is an annual metal festival organized by Pivotal Rockordings founder and Chicago native Alexi Front. The festival’s mission is to give a new generation of talented bands from Scandinavia and abroad a unique live platform in the metal capital of the world. Scorched Tundra is a carefully curated musical experience. Its billing based on sound not stature creates a unique listening and visual experience for the audience.
PELICAN is an international standard bearer in the instrumental metal and doom scenes. Since it’s formation in 2000, the Chicago based four piece has seamlessly integrated sludgy soundscapes with post-alternative influences, creating brutal riff-oriented tracks throughout the course of several full length albums and a handful of short length releases most recently via Southern Lord Records. Coming to Sweden exclusively to play Scorched Tundra V, Day 2 will mark PELICAN’s first headline show in Northern Europe in seven years, to be celebrated with a set that encompasses the bands entire decade and a half career.
MARTYRDÖD has cemented itself as a legendary act in the European D-Beat “Käng” movement. Armed with distinctive melodic sensibilities that distinguish the Gothenburg based four piece from their contemporaries, MARTYRDÖD has released five full-length albums to date, most recently Elddop (Southern Lord Records, 2014). Having toured the USA and Europe countless times, the bands engaging live performance will be on full display as the headlining act on Day 1.
KONGH will be performing two unique sets at Scorched Tundra V. Known for its devastating atmospherics and rich melodies paired with groove laden guitars, this Småland based three piece has already racked up numerous accolades including a nomination for P3 Guld Award, #1 Position in Close Up Magazine’s SoundCheck in 2007 and 2009; performances at Metal Town and Roadburn Festivals; and most recently a Scandinavian run with MESHUGGAH and a European headline tour. On Day 1 KONGH will perform songs rarely or never heard live from their first two albums Counting Heartbeats (Trust No One Recordings, 2007) and Shadows of the Shapeless (Music Fear Satan, 2010), while on Day 2 new, unreleased songs previously not performed live will be showcased as well as select tracks from the band’s third release Sole Creation (Agonia Records, 2013).
MONOLORD is arguably the most devastating fuzz trio active in Sweden. The bands debut effort Empress Rising (Riding Easy Records, 2014) received wide praise from the European metal press. Picking up where SLEEP and ELECTRIC WIZARD leave off, MONOLORD creates its own space in an increasingly crowded genre, interspersing trippy vocals, earth rattling bass and an overall “fuzzed out landscape.” The band recently released its sophomore album Vænir (Riding Easy Records, 2015) and devastated audiences at Roadburn Festival in Holland. The band’s Scorched Tundra V Day 2 performance follows an extensive US tour with WINDHAND.
SALEM’S POT is a psychedelic doom five piece hailing from central Sweden. The bands elusive image complements an incredibly unique sound that has become established through a series of short and full-length releases, a recent European tour with label mates MONOLORD, and an appearance at Roadburn Festival this spring. On October 31st SALEM’S POT will release a 7” titled The Vampire Strikes Back (Riding Easy Records). The band makes a strong statement about itself: “They used to wake up on your couch, not wanting to wake up. Desperately clinging to sin, degradation, murder and substance abuse. With nothing left inside they made an attempt to tell someone about it, and the dead chuckled merrily. You’re not alone.” Day 1 will provide an opportunity to witness SALEM’S POT’s psychedelic spells.
AGE OF WOE released its debut full length album Inhumanform (Suicide Records/Give Praise Records) in spring 2013 and has already added to its growing fan base within the hardcore/metal scenes by touring multiple times in Scandinavia and Central Europe in addition to appearing at numerous festivals. AGE OF WOE recorded Inhumanform live with legendary producer Lennart Östlund (LED ZEPPELIN, CANDLEMASS). The album was mixed by long-time collaborator Carlos Sepulveda and mastered by Brad Boatright (SLEEP, HIGH ON FIRE, FROM ASHES RISE). The Gothenburg based five-piece will be recording its sophomore album this year, and embarking on a European tour this autumn with IMPLORE, in addition to performing on Day 2 of Scorched Tundra V.
ANTI RITUAL is a new band consisting of four experienced musicians with roots in the Copenhagen hardcore and metal scene. The sixteen minutes of music on the band’s eponymous debut self-titled EP can be described as a bastard of hardcore, sludge, and black metal, conveying aggression and negative feelings in musical form. Anti Ritual was recorded and produced by the band itself, mixed by Jakob Reichert Nielsen and mastered by Brad Boatright (NAILS, SLEEP, FROM ASHES RISE, HIGH ON FIRE). Opening Day 2, Scorched Tundra V will be ANTI RITUAL’s first performance in Sweden.
MAMMOTH STORM, the opening act on Day 2, is a new doom three piece from Säffle, Värmland. Founded in 2012, the bands primary purpose is to deliver crushing, devastating sounds, as most recently evinced by the Rite of Ascension (2014) EP. MAMMOTH STORM’s upcoming full-length album Fornjot will be released this autumn through Napalm Records and will be followed by a European tour with label mates and funeral doom legends AHAB.
